2010 Nati Awards Theme The theme for this years Nati Awards is "Nga Haka me nga Waiata o Ngati Porou."
Ngati Porou has a long history in the art forms of composition and performance, and our contribution to these creative mediums continues to make an impact in the present day. Nga Haka me Nga Waiata o Ngati Porou is the kaupapa for this years 2010
Te Rangitawaea Festival and Nati Awards competition. Please encourage your students to research the stories behind this interesting kaupapa and then transform them into digital art forms!
Some ideas to get you started: ( Please note waiata can be in English or Maori).
· Research traditional and contemporary composers such as: Apirana Ngata, Henare Waitoa, Ngoi Pewhairangi, Tuini Ngawai, Kuini Moehau Reedy, Kahu Waitoa ...
· Interview pakeke from your hapu and research what is the meaning behind the waiata, moteatea, haka from your area.
· What is the famous Ngati Porou stomp? Who are the groups performing in the Matatini 2011?
· True Natiwood Story: What’s the story behind famous Ngati Porou compositions and their writers? What was happening during the time the song was written that may have influenced the writer?
· What kinds of music are Ngati Porou musicians writing about or performing today?
· What is the meaning behind the actions in the haka “ Ara Ra Kapanapana”?
